Any frequenter of the cassette renovation may be aware of the illustrious Stunned Records imprint, and anyone who has ever purchased one of the many releases to spew from their impressive catalog will know of the immense quality at hand-- from the packaging to the sounds contained on the medium. The label's first batch-extensive venture into Phil French's colored pencil artwork certainly struck me, but what stood even more salient was the lineup behind the latest release in Stunned's discography: Minutiae: an alliance between Phil French and William Giacchi of the immersive Super Minerals and Jeffry Astin of the euphoric Xiphiidae moniker.
The rifts left to divide each member's influence is nonexistent in the case of Plane Sight. Astin's warped tape loop clutter comfortably resides within French and Giacchi's marsh of spellbinding tones. Serenity and tension are in equilibrium; individually, each layer appears capricious, yet as they intertwine the tapestry conceived is absolutely enamoring. Unlike minutiae, insignificant factors meant to be avoided, the details are essential to the panoramic environment.
Minutiae also exist within the realm of forensics as traits of a fingerprint-- a more comprehensible representation of Plane Sight. Separated into three phases per side, all of which being quasi-homophones, each track feels as if a cell of a greater prospect. The dyad of these spectral shores was destined to come along and what materialized was a billowing utopia of a cassette, as well as a gem among each artist's body of work.
