Bricolage - Bricolage (Slumberland, 2009)

So, I bought this just today. I listened to the whole album very thoroughly and I have to say that Bricolage is great at tricking a reviewer into whether or not the album is good. I enjoyed this, I found it a little odd to be on Slumberland, however. Most of the bands on there are in the whole lo-fi scene, you know (ex: The Pains of Being Pure At Heart, Cause-Co Motion!, etc.)? And this sounds nearly nothing like Slumberland's catalog. I can see the guys working there enjoying it though.

Bricolage is a band from Glasgow, Scotland and is now known around the Olive Music office as the exact opposite of originality. That sounded a little harsh, however, Bricolage's self-titled debut has its moments. Every song has the same verse-chorus-verse structure and never really goes beyond those boundaries, we've all heard the melodies in one song or another, and the fills are pretty predictable. It's a very nice chill-out album. It seems as though with all these noise rock and lo-fi bands out there there's not enough space for straight-forward pop. And that's where Bricolage come in. They create a delicately crafted rebellion against noise.

In my head, I see this album syncing perfectly with any kind of dating movie or chick flick from '98-2001. Or it could be played on a beautiful summer day while having a margarita with your loved one. The songs never really progress or meander. They stay in their little bubble of sunshine and happiness to keep a listener relaxed and relieved of any stress.
