You ever get that feeling where you're like "Woooooaahh man I'm gonna buy an album from like, my fave band ever" and you find THE LAST/ONLY copy available? That was me! Though their previous release Benaki was my favorite album of '08 next to Abe Vigoda's Skeleton, Hermit Thrushes made a comeback coming down a slightly different road. This road was more mellow and layback than Benaki was. WAY more mellow. Sure it did hold back on their chaotic qualities but, Slight Fountain still ended up being really good.
If you never heard Hermit Thrushes, they're a very mathy and off-kilter band that add soft subtleties to their music. On Slight Fountain, the subtleties grow into styles. So, the guitars are a lot cleaner and they incorporate more acoustic guitar into the music. Slight Fountain, I have to say, is a bad album to start with. I HIGHLY, HIGHLY recommend Benaki. I had that on repeat for hours when I first ordered it. This, I know I'll listen to it, but not so much for pleasure as it is me determining the quality of this.
With this album's soft melodies and clean tones, I think it syncs perfectly with an independent French romance film. Benaki leaves you a little confused, thinking whether or not these guys can play guitar or not. They most definitely can, I think they're some of the best guitar players I've ever heard.
On a side note, why in the world did Tiny Mix Tapes A). Give this 2 1/2 stars? and B). Compare Hermit Thrushes to Dirty Projectors? Yeah, good guitar players. THEY SOUND NOTHING ALIKE. Sometimes I just don't know what to say about TMT...
Anyways, for fans of dissonance, dissonance may be overdone a bit.
