The Intelligence - Fake Surfers (In The Red, 2009)

Unbeknownst to me, The Intelligence came out with a new album recently. I wasn't expecting them to be so prolific with this album though. I mean their previous album Deuteronomy came out only summer of last year I think. Oh wait, September '07. Whatever, I guess it's normal to be quick with releases when you're making lo-fi music.

Fake Surfers, to me, is the reincarnation of The *real* Intelligence. Deuteronomy wasn't exactly my favorite record of theirs; it seemed too sell-out-ish and bluesy to me. Same thing goes for one of their earlier releases, Boredom and Terror. This is more Icky Baby-era than anything. Icky Baby was my favorite release. This however, has less noise and more music. It's just poppier than your average In The Red release. It EVEN has acoustic guitar in it ("Warm Transfers", "Pony People"). This is a lot more fast-paced and catchier than their other albums. It's an album that I say it's necessary to dance to ("Moody Tower").

The titles interest me; I mean Fake Surfers? Who else could that be referring to? They even have a song entitled "Fuck Eat Skull". That's funny because one of the members of Eat Skull is actually in the band that wrote the song. I highly recommend this album to people who enjoy that one "Fake Surfing" band, Blank Dogs, and even Eat Skull fans. It's pretty accessible, in fact.
