Navigator is Braden J. McKenna and Garrick Biggs (also of Stag Hare) creating a blend of folk and lo-fi pop. Now of course, the whole lo-fi thing has been so overused to the point where it's this bandwagon that people just can't help but jump on. I promise you Navigator's third album Bad Children is not another regurgitation of Hippie Steedfeces and that one band that likes fonts.
The first thing I can compare this album to is Meth Teeth. How it mixes traditional folk with some pop sensibilities and being terribly recorded. You can't help but enjoy this. I'm glad that it's somewhat more refined than the previous bands I listed. You can at least make out the lyrics, allowing you to sing these songs in the office while your colleagues are asking you, "Is that a Bob Dylan song."; obviously you don't want to respond because your colleagues wouldn't know who Navigator is anyway.
"Change", I have to say, is my favorite song.
Bad Children just has beautiful melodies just wrapped in that Plan-It-X aesthetic. If you really don't enjoy that folk punk stuff because you're a sissy who loves all that Coner Oberst stuff, it's not the end of the world. TIME IS ON YOUR SIDE! There are a few songs, about half of the album, that are just the combination of acoustic guitar and vocals. You're welcome. Now go do your homework and download that Navigator album! Or if cassette is your preference, you can buy Bad Children on tape in the late summer via Mooondial Tapes.
