NYC's Hunters, Run! decided to release a series of 7"s after recording two albums. Each 7" was very limited-- 200 copies. The first one was released in January of '09 and was sold out. Luckily it was repressed. This is their second 7" in the series.
I remember hearing Hunters, Run! before. I wasn't all too interested for some reason. I kept hearing about them and stumbled upon this. After hearing it, I was impressed. The odd thing about it is that they're being compared to artists such as Talking Heads and Elvis Costello. I've also heard that they've experimented with genres as well. EP2 is really good, but there's no experimenting involved.
There's always enough room for a band that doesn't have to try to revolutionize music. Hunters, Run! do it perfectly. If you're in just a "blah" mood, definitely put this on your turntable. The songs aren't catchy, no experimenting, and just barely any variety. Hopefully that doesn't sound rude. Because it does sound like that, but it's not any kind of criticism. This reminds me of Meneguar, one of my favorite bands. The thing I love about them is that they're so straight-forward that you want to hear it more and more to see if there's a difference between them and any other band, there isn't. And I really like EP2 for that.
The first track, "If I Had Half A Chance" contains just a really to-the-point rock song. The melody, from what I hear, hasn't been used before. It's original, but it's nothing that'll get stuck in your head. Same goes for the second track "Simple And Calming". It is what it sounds like. Simple and calming. What makes it that way is its verse-chorus-verse structure and mildly technical riffs. Not mind-boggling, nothing that'll catch your attention. But sometimes, independent music needs that kind of sound.
