I have no idea when this was released. I checked the CD case, nothing. I checked the label's website and it seems like they don't even know when this was released. So, despite the lack of information I have, this album is KILLER.
Influences definitely throw back to Bipolar Bear and Lightning Bolt. It's a bass and drum duo. Lightning Bolt, of course. And not because I'm bias and I think any bass and drum duo sounds like Lightning Bolt. Even the tone of the bass and how chaotic the drums are have "LB" written all over them. I can respect The Pope for that, most definitely. And Bipolar Bear becomes prominent due to the vocals. They're somewhat teenage, very reverberated and hard to make out. They even have time to incorporate comedy, mainly into the song titles, but only mildly. You can never really take them seriously.
Nearly every song, minus the fillers, were all insane. When an album surprises me with every song, there's no doubt it's really good. Honestly, every song will have one of those suspenseful moments. Although The Pope does sound A LOT like Lightning Bolt, it definitely works well while trying to wait for the next LB album, whenever that'll be.
PS: I got this at Amoeba for $2 in the clearance section, plus it was a promo copy. So worth it.
You got me checkin' this!
