Sun Araw, or Cameron, is a great musician. Don't get me wrong. But he made this album too focused on one certain thing that may not be all that interesting. His last three albums, The Phynx, Beach Head and Boat Trip were all good. They had an obvious psychedelic style and kept it consistent while adding progression and buildup. This however, stays most of the time in this new dub kind of style. It's decent, but it doesn't really progress and after about 4 minutes of it, it becomes tedious.
I can see what he was trying to do here, I don't know. The beats never changed, but that's an average thing for Sun Araw (see "Canopy" from Boat Trip). The beats were a little cheesy, like Lamborghini Crystal but they didn't really fit well. Heavy Deeds does, however, have change. But the change goes from "long dub song" to "3 minute drone filler". This is definitely his worst album, but I still give him credit for what was made before. It's OK, but I wouldn't give this to a first time Sun Araw listener, as accessible as it may be.
Amazing blog, good reviews, nice design.
