UUVVWWZ - UUVVWWZ (Saddle Creek, 2009)

UUVVWWZ is another one of those "up and coming" bands out there. They were just recently signed to Saddle Creek records, making this their debut. By your average debut standards, it's near flawless. UUVVWWZ's songs aren't all chaotic and they don't mess around too much. Every song is well written and structured.

The album can be split up into two parts: the post-punk anthems and the ballads. I don't know how many there are of which. Maybe more ballads but they're able to squeeze in a little punk tune in the middle. Either way, a lot of the songs are unpredictable and catchy. By unpredictable, they don't go all over the place and end up having three songs in one. I mean they all mess around and go back and forth between genres, but it's expected after you hear the beginning of the song.

The ballads get this weird sort of Wye Oak "alt-country" feel to them, and I don't know how they pulled it off after hearing "Shark Suit". They become really mellow and once the chorus comes in, it's all fast and punky. After hearing the chorus though, it becomes expected; for better or worse.

The post-punk anthems are great. They're technical and goofy. And UUVVWWZ aren't bad songwriters either. They definitely don't stoop down to Sonic Youth's level and fill in the missing spaces with nonsense. The guitar effects are one of the highlights of the album, they're all over the place. Most of the guitar solos on this are like that. They twist and turn knobs, making the guitars go all over the place.

Although I don't see UUVVWWZ getting too popular from this, it's definitely a hidden gem.
