Modest Mouse - No One's First, And You're Next EP (Epic, 2009)

These days, I can't trust Modest Mouse anymore. They went from having a post-rock-esque and experimental style, but now they appeal to a completely different audience. Their 2007 release We Were Dead Before The Ship Even Sank was a disappointment to many. Their earlier release Good News For People Who Love Bad News, in fact, was also considered a downer. The band lost their technicality and experimental side, and took a more simplistic and straight-forward approach.

No One's First, And You're Next is an EP compiled of b-sides and unreleased recordings that were made between their last two albums. For b-sides, I think they're worth hearing. Maybe not every song in its entirety, but some of them are well-written and show the good old Modest Mouse we all knew (see: "The Whale Song"). There are some obviously not-so-good songs on this, like "King Rat" which have that attempt at sounding like sailor songs. The superior songs would be the more poppy numbers, like "Satellite Skin" and "I've Got It All (Most)".

Unfortunately, this release wasn't intended to show what Modest Mouse's next album would sound like. It was intended to show just "scraps" and "unfinished products" of what could've been on previous releases. It's pretty consistent for an EP full of tracks just pulled off of seven inches and singles. If you own all of the singles and seven inches already, don't waste your time and money purchasing this. But if you don't and you consider yourself a Modest Mouse fan, it wouldn't hurt to hear some relatively new songs.
