Neon Indian is the name of what is to be a multimedia project by Alan Palomo and visual/video artist Alicia Scardetta. Initially creating enough hipster hype by rather successfully hiding their identities (though not entirely successfully as they were outted), this project has gained greater momentum across the internet as music has gradually been leaked. So what's it like? Well the buzz is "synthetic nostalgia, Dreampop lullabies, and grinding guitar noise." But to be honest what they have seems to be far more like MGMT but slowed down and with extra synth electro pop thrown in for good measure.
Neon Indian despite having the rather obviously similar sound and style as MGMT, they do lack the poppy hooks that have made MGMT quite as popular as they are. What Neon Indian do have instead is a far dreamier sound, as they have rather mastered "dreampop lullabies" and their own generally lazy sound. Don't get me wrong, this is some nice dance music but it's dance music on a sweltering day where you feel like dancing but anything faster than this then you're gonna collapse into a single great pile of melted mush and bones. To put it in a slightly nicer way it's low and lazy dance music but at the same time delicious and I assure you delicious is the word with the bass and drum tracks being just that, warm and delicious.
Psychic Chasms is Neon Indian's debut release and rather sadly shan't be out till October 13th. The reason I say sadly is for two reasons: 1. I'd really quite like to be able to buy it now and 2. In this listener's opinion the tracks have a very summery quality to them, well most do.
The initial stand-out track is "Deadbeat Summer" with its laid back beat and a vocal style to match it is the perfect lazy summer's day anthem. The tempo in fact doesn't get much faster on any other tracks, the album is indeed perfectly summed up by a track "Terminally Chill" which has some really fantastically melodic moments and cooler vocals are nowhere to be found.
So far I haven't heard a single bad track come from Neon Indian and indeed Palomo seems to have an ear for a great melody, in all these lazy songs are for the chilled among us all. Their album Psychic Chasms seems to incorporate modern synth pop with occasional nostalgia and nods toward 80's electro. If you dig MGMT or anything nicely chilled I sincerely recommend this band your way.
