V/A - Indiecater Vol 4. (Indiecater, 2009)

Well let's get through this thing track by track:

Side A

1. Sofia Talvik – My James Dean
To be honest this track is okay, it's pretty boring and safe. There's nothing to make it stand out hugely other than the nice wee bit o' strings hither and thither. Imagine Nouvelle Vague but more electrified and bland.

2. Subplots – Politis
To be brutally honest it's like a second rate Coldplay, there's something intrinsically boring in the singer's voice and the over use of that single harmony going "noooowwwwwwwwwwwwww" over and over again is nothing to be proud of.

3. Marching Band – Aggravate
At the very least this is more interesting in terms of instrumentation compared to the first two tracks. With some nicely jangled guitar lines and jaunty organ quite make up for the slightly generic vocal. Listenable, kinda catchy, indie pop.

4. Office – Dominoes
As with the above track, this is somewhat more jolly and jaunty in its feel. It ain't too bad, as with the first two though, nothing cutting edge or stand out about it. Bog standard indie rock pop.

5. Languis – Times Are Changing
Well, I won't lie, there's not much to say about this. The instrumentation isn't bad but gets quite repetitive and the vocal lacks any impact. it might as well not be there. This song has the rare high point with cool ambience and such but has far greater low points.

6. Mitchell Museum – Warning Bells
I like this, I don't know why but I like it. It's not bad, it's got a good feel to it but it could definitely grate on some people. I know it'll grate on me if i listen to it probably more than twice.

7. The Love Language – Lalita
This I like too, it's got a sound and fits in with that whole Lo Fi thing that's going on. Some fine guitar work and a strong vocal and lyric. By far the most listenable so far.

8. FM Belfast – Underwear
Well this isn't too terrible, at least it's not boring. I feel like if i didn't just want to laugh at their repetition of the lyric, "We're running down the streets in our underwear" that i could like this and take it possibly seriously.

9. The Second Hand Marching Band – A Dance To Half Death
Well this kind of puts me on side immediately cause they're singin with Scottish accents on full display. Unconventional folk is how they're tagged which isn't a bad way of puttin it and I have to say this a great wee tune mostly thanks to tight brass section and other melodies and counter melodies that are backin the scottish warble. Officially the best of Side A.

Side B

10. Princeton – Ms. Bentwich
The ukulele and bird song opening I feel is a tad misleading. This song is all about lush string arrangements, twinkling harpsichord, flutes and harps in full blast and such. If anything they go too heavy on the orchestral backing which in the end detracts from the vocal and other more basic instrumentation.

11. The Uglysuit – Chicago
Nothing too remarkable, some nice keyboard work but other than that it moves at snails pace and should be featured on a program like Grey's Anatomy or something. With its random swells, it'd fit perfectly to an "emotional montage"

12. Roofwalkers – Tear Down The Tents
Gentle folk pop. It's allright, it's gentle, good background music and would be good if you lived somewhere sunny, which sadly i don't.

13. Warpaint – Bille Holiday
A little bit of me hoped that the person singing would sound a little bit like Billie Holiday but that didn't happen. Instead this sounds like early Cat Power. I typed this and then noticed the title of the next song...

14. Black Nielson – Love Song To Chan Marshall
Quite a few long notes. Don't see how it relates to Cat Power that much but there ya go...
It's okay, bit boring.

15. Sweet Jane – Blackboots & Blackhearts
This is lack lustre till you get a certain degree of bombastisity from the chorus. That said, the verse is like a damp squid.

16. Zinedines – Twice Upon A Time
These guys sound like they've been listening to The Byrds just a bit too much. Nothing objectionable to them.

17. Delorentos – Solitude
If this is the fate of irish music may it be killed swiftly now.

18. Honeyheads – Out Of Marseille
This isn't too bad quite possibly worth further investigation as they show promise. this song has a good feel to it, gives me good vibes and it strays far from the folk pop rock that it opens with in the latter half of the song.

19. Shout Out Out Out Out – Guilt Trips Sink Ships
And the finale, what have we got in store for us. A drum beat, with some clicks, aaah i see it's building, what will come next...strange synth noises like from the start of Radio GaGa. Aah it eventually gets into a proper song. A kinda fun electronica one at that. It gets a thumbs up from me. It's got some good elements to it.

Well that there rounds up Indiecater Vol. 4.
