1. Male Bonding/Eat Skull Split 7" (Tough Love, 2009)I'd like to thank DJ Rick over at Art For Spastics for mentioning this on his show. For being only a song per side, it really is my favorite 7" at the moment. The A-side is Male Bonding's song "Year's Not Long" which is, from what I've heard on their myspace, my favorite song of theirs. If you don't know Male Bonding, they are a PRE side-project consisting of just about every member of the band except Exceedingly Good Keex. Their sound is of course badly recorded but it has pop-punk written all over it. The B-side is Eat Skull's song "Heaven's Stranger"--I have to say I'm not really a fan of Eat Skull's work, but this song definitely got me into them and has made me reconsider their latest album Wild And Inside. If you want really poppy and hooky punk tunes, it's only like $5.
2. Sic Alps "L. Mansion" 7" (Slumberland, 2009)Though Sic Alps have been sucked up by the Slumberland vacuum, they still have the common decency to supply us with a couple catchy tunes. Side A begins with the title track "L. Mansion" which, if you've heard at least one Sic Alps album before, sounds no different than what they've done in the past. Which isn't bad, sometimes I like being reminded what a band sounds like. "Superlungs" is more just straight-forward lo-fi pop with a piano only playing one note in the background. It's really nothing special. It's almost as if Sic Alps are trying to give new fans an idea of what they sound like. You know, with like a start-up release.
3. Ducktails/Julian Lynch Split 7" + DVD-R (Underwater Peoples, 2009) WE ALL KNOW ABOUT THESE TWO ARTISTS SO LET'S JUST GET STARTED AND GO! Side A is Ducktails and it is what you expect, a 6-minute psychedelic song that's a bit repetitive, not exactly Matt Mondanile's best work but it's Ducktails, come on. If you watch it on the DVD it's got pretty pictures. As for Side B, there's Julian Lynch, not entirely a psychedelic song (there's wah-wah) but it beats side a by a mile. Sowwy. Even though I don't really listen to Lynch that much, "Garden 2" is near perfect. Great falsetto, nice melody, and a nice video to tag along with it. I say buy this 7" for Julian Lynch.
whats wrong with eat skull man?
ReplyDeleteThe vocals. Just never liked them.
ReplyDeletei do wish they would make them cleaner, cos unlike most like-minded bands, rob actually has some stuff to say with his lyrics... but when you can't hear em whats the point?
