Sleepover - Sleepover (Magic Goat Music, 2010)

This is quite possibly the single most boring album I've ever heard. FACT. Now I may be overstating this a bit and indeed I've probably heard more boring albums and I may have gone into the realms of hyperbole but I don't regret saying it for a minute. Every song on this album follows a formula and I imagine the discussion about it went along the lines of, "Standard and unimaginative indie riffs?" "Check." "Singer who doesn't experiment with her voice at all and indeed struggles a bit to stay in tune at times?" "Check." "And finally, some poor mixing to make it sound that bit more, I don't know, indie?" "Yea we got that covered." "Great let's release this album!"

Now once again I delve into hyperbole but my opinions are in there. The tracks are unimaginative and do nothing for me both musically and lyrically. They bring the levels down on the vocals which leave in its wake nothing but some boring riffs. They're the kind of riffs that The Strokes threw in the bin cause they didn't want them or thought they were a bit shit to use. The singer is probably a lovely girl but I'm confused as to whether she's talking or singing or both at the same time and if she is trying both at the same time--is she staying in key? Sometimes I'm just really not so sure.

There's a certain no-wave charm to it that makes me want to think they're like a bad version of Young Marble Giants but even when I do that I just can't help but think even that's being maybe a bit too generous. There are a few good guitar playing moments but they're few and far between. The tracks are drowned in drum noise but to no real positive effect, with Campfires the turned up drums gives a rip roaring effect, here it just sounds like poor levelling.

All in all, bad times for Sleepover.
