Ahh, power electronics: one of the most brutal forms of music, yet hard to 'do right'. Like any form of hateful and/or disgusting music, one must embody power electronics, one must embody the hate and filth, less one may seem cheeky. I've seen the good P.E. firsthand, and I've seen the bad P.E. firsthand.
Now let's talk about Nyodene D's new c40 cassette, God And Country. It's on this industrial/power electronics label known as Danvers State Recordings, who has done an absolutely wonderful job packaging these. The J-card has not one, not two, but three fold outs and an insert! While the fold outs acts as artwork, the insert does a great job explaining the "message" of the album.
The basic idea is that the A-side of the tape represents all oppressors of personal liberty (the church and the government), and the B-side is the voice of the rebel. What seems like it should be simple enough concept, the tape is actually incredibly rich and textured. What you're not getting is a feedback loop with a guy screaming "FUCK THE GOVERNMENT. WAKE UP SHEEPLE!!" over and over. What you are getting is a story told from both sides. Rarely does the antagonist get to speak first on albums like this. The more I dwell on that idea, the more I realize about this album. Both sides represent the antagonist. There is no protagonist. Only a destructive cycle, a never ending battle raging back and forth as the world burns.
I highly recommend this tape to anyone who likes pissed-off power electronics, DIY, harsh noise, or general social unrest. My only complaint about this album is that the mastering seems a bit off. The audio seems to peak at some points and be way to quiet at others (although the panning is excellent), but that may just be my walkman. God And Country is sold out from Danvers State Recordings but will be available soon from RRRecords, Malignant, and Molehill. Nyodene D will also have copies on his upcoming tour in March.
