Gorillaz - Plastic Beach (EMI, 2010)

It's been five years since the last Gorillaz album, Demon Days, was released. During the five year break, Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett made a opera about monkeys and coming up with new ideas for the next Gorillaz album, Plastic Beach. Plastic Beach is not just your typical album. It takes you into the world of the Gorillaz. Plastic Beach is an island in the middle of the ocean - made out of all of the junk in the world. I'm trying not to sound like a pretentious writer (*cough* Pitchfork *cough*) but basically Plastic Beach is representing the collaboration with all the artists on the album.

Sixteen tracks is an awful lot for an album but it works well for this concept album. The orchestra intro makes you feel as if you're entering a lost world. Once the bass kicks in, Snoop Dogg introduces you to the world of the Plastic Beach. I have to admit, I got shivers down my spine. I was in total shock of how amazing this was. The rest of the album flows very well. As if they're trying to make a new Sgt. Pepper's for this era.

One of Plastic Beach's flaws is how it focuses more on the featured artist rather than Damon Albarn. But don't get me wrong, all of the songs are really amazing. One of my favorite tracks is "Superfast Jellyfish" featuring Gruff Rhys from Super Furry Animals/Neon Neon and De La Soul. You may remember De La Soul from "Feel Good Inc." off of Demon Days. Overall, this a great album for any fan of pop music. As of right now, it is my favorite album of 2010.
