Woah, I'm back to writing again! The reason for my hiatus may be attributed to a few reasons, namely poor time management skills, but also because I had yet to find that perfect summer album, and well, halfway through summer I think I've finally got it.
If you're unfamiliar with Mr. Baribeau I'll do my best to explain, the dude has a beard and plays a style of music commonly referred to as 'folk punk'. Now, Paul's last album, Grand Ledge, was one of those never-get-bored-of pieces. Sounds great no matter what mood you're in or what time of the year it is, which I find a lot of albums incapable of doing. That made me real nervous going into Unbearable, thinking maybe Baribeau had peaked with Grand Ledge and didn't have that spark anymore. Good god damn was I wrong.
Unbearable is plain and simply beautiful. The album starts with this absolutely perfect line, "What am i gonna do now?/ Maybe move to a new town?". Not even twenty seconds into the album and I'm already having doubts about myself. Not to say that I'm not just crazy and insecure, but two lines in has gotta mean something! What really sets this album apart from Grand Ledge though is the production: the guitar sounds like the strings are made of gold, or magic, maybe gold strings wouldn't sound good. Has anyone tried that? Anyway, what I'm trying to say here is that everything just sounds so fresh, so crisp. Paul's voice sounds great, the lyrics are lighthearted enough to swallow, but deep enough to provoke thought, and it makes for great summertime cruisin' jams. Oh and did I mention you can pay whatever you want for it? Do yourself a favor and go see this dude on his upcoming tour!
