When new Bee Mask tapes drop, I always get excited. With good reason too. Bee Mask's most recent effort on his own Deception Island imprint entitled From a Will-Less Gigolo of a Divinity to the Gore-Spattered Lion on His Own Hearth, Odysseus Becomes “Odysseus” (and referred to here on out as simply "Odysseus") has got to be my favorite release of his since-- well, his last release. What I love the most about this tape is it's almost a return to form for him. Older Bee Mask releases like Prelude and First Enormous Peacock and Colony Collapse 2 offer a much more dense approach. Vast walls of synth with subtle changes are what originally drew me to Bee Mask, it was the subtlety in the changes and synth washes that I craved-- but his first LP on Weird Forest seemed like a drastic change was to come.Notes and patterns began to emerge and what one could almost classify as 'normal music patterns' became prevalent, and it was awesome. Since then his tapes like Canzoni dal Laboratorio del Silenzio Cosmico have offered this same type of approach, not, however, losing that subtle touch. However where there were previously two sides of the Bee Mask coin, "Odysseus" seems to blend the two with a third type of approach (which has been affectionately referred to in my apartment as the 'digital cavern sound').
On this tape Bee Mask has drippy walls of synth mashed up with more traditional synth-type playing with a fast BPM, and both of these intersect a vast, droney, field recording or tape manipulation sound. These three elements dance together in a slow motion ballet of the most cosmic proportions. Stay away from drugs on this one, because images of Blade Runner meets March of the Penguins are almost a guarantee on this one. Do your ajna chakra a favor and grip this before it's OOP forever.
