Dikes of Holland are an up-and-coming five-piece hailing from Austin, Texas. Back in January, Dikes of Holland made waves when they were featured on Matador Records' local compilation, Casual Victim Pile. Now, they've put forth their self-titled debut on Sundae Records. In the press release, their sound has been described as "avant-garde garage psychedelia," which I find to be a pretty accurate description.
From the psychedelic opener, "Get Your Shovels Out" to the fast-paced garage rock closer, "Gone", this album is one hell of a ride. All of the tracks are very energetic, exciting and will leave the listener wanting more. One of the tracks that stands out the most is "I've Brothers Everywhere". Its sneer vocals and repetitive three chord riff make it a definitive garage rock track. Though not entirely distinguishable, Dikes of Holland have a very fun and endearing sound.
Overall, this album is very fun. Not one of these tracks seem forgettable or boring. I also suggest keeping an eye out on Dikes of Holland this month: the album in question will be available on 16th in local record stores and online via iTunes and Bandcamp. Also, there will be a release show on the 17th at Beerland in Austin if you're in the area. In short, Dikes of Holland have the capability of being frivolous without restricting themselves to the formula that similar bands set.
