Orvis Otto - Dust Attracts Its Kin (Grotto Mimosa, 2010)

The introductory batch to the newly revamped Grotto Mimosa imprint has been quite a spectacular one. Its aesthetic currently focuses on acoustic-generated sounds, from melodically unique folk to expansive improvisational pieces, accompanied by Brandon Siscoe's striking artwork. Each release is limited and hand-numbered as well, giving themselves both an aurally and visually distinctive style. Orvis Otto's Dust Attracts Its Kin, the imprint's latest foray, would be cut of the latter cloth.

The first significant aspect to note is the atmosphere of Dust Attracts Its Kin. The recordings themselves elicit spontaneity; each sound and tone resonate from the same source throughout, and these pieces seem to be devoid of editing-- with the exception of the fades that introduce and conclude both pieces. The room ambiance does Dust Attracts Its Kin more justice than any professional studio recording would: the thundering percussion that appears half-way through the first movement, soaring strings, and cavernous piano echoes bring a level of intimacy that few others convey.

Unlike many improvisational recordings, Orvis Otto opt to keep to a pattern on Dust Attracts Its Kin. Divided into two 25-minute movements, the quartet propose a structure of folk that evolves and devolves; drifting in and out of groove. The progressive structures and band interplay are this album's highlights: one member will introduce a simple concept-- like a violin melody or an acoustic chord progression, and gradually, others elaborate upon this idea to carry the concept to a vibrantly flourishing culmination.

Though just recently debuting, the quartet of Orvis Otto have started off on a great foot with Dust Attracts Its Kin. Throughout these 50 minutes the band fluctuates from sparsely singular instrumentation to beautifully elaborate dynamics. These two movements represent fantastic jam sessions that are personified by the serene melodies that they develop.
