"Cops Don't Care" comes on fast, frantic and colorful with super fuzzy distorted guitar, a pulsing bass, harmonizing vocal "coo's" and guitar, shaken together with tambourine. Makes me want to hear the first ten seconds on loop and bounce around my room thinking "Come on spring! We've got bikes and skateboards and frisbees here!" The vocals kick in distorted, croon-ey, debonair and muddled-- coming off cool and aloof-- not unlike Television or Interpol. Production passes on the lo-fi vibe and heads straight to no-fi goodness and closes the piece up with some sweetened reverse-feedback guitar. The piece doesn't let up its happy beer-chugging rhythm till its abrupt end.
The B-side is nearly completely the opposite. "Heat Isn't The Word" is a slow-drifting number with languid delayed reverberated vocals and gentle, clean, melodic guitar. A steady bass drum, rich, lush and dense, throbs through the piece as all parts coalesce into a dream-scape-- "Sady Hawkins"-- hands on her hips-- trip into reverie.
From M'Lady Records out of the most musical of states, Michigan! (Yeah, I said it.) Wonderful, psych-collage from Hisham Bharoocha (Black Dice, Soft Circle, your favorite art gallery) graces the sleeve.
