V/A - Brains On Backwash III: Backwash To The Future! (905 Tapes, 2011)

Mike Haley's 905 Tapes imprint has been warping minds for three years now releasing the cream of experimental music's crop. A few notable works have been by artists such as Wether (Haley's own moniker), Joe Breitenbach, and releases within the Brave Grave string, which limit a single artist to their barest tools. The label's longevity, however, is celebrated annually with the Brains On Backwash series, gathering a surfeit of underground artists and compiling their opuses into a massively clogged reel of a cassette.

Analogies and references to bacteria, toxic waste, and similar obscenities feel almost inescapable when detailing the sounds of a 905 release, and Brains On Backwash III falls prey to that correlation. Eclectically assembled with 27 contributors, this 100-minute cassette is a primer to the cassette underground, pooling abrasive noise flak alongside rippled, psychedelic textures. Brains On Backwash III is indubitably an exhausting and psyche-altering experience, and its duration contributes the most to that sentiment-- which may be for better or worse depending on your attention span.

905 Tapes has compiled a diverse set of the finest in the unconventional; even the most selective of listeners will unearth an engrossing piece among the opulence of abnormality. Unlike the scattered and inconsistent pacing that many compilations are subject to, this remains erratic, yet each composition inhabits a kindred semblance-- even the most polar pair of contributions remain remnants of the cassette's theme. Brains On Backwash III is a sporadic compendium of the most abusive and transfixing ends of the auditory spectrum, as well as a great piece of insight toward a burgeoning powerhouse in experimental music.
