Gainesville, Florida's Rotifer imprint has become one of the most consistent labels around since its inception in 2009. Marked by a cassette reissue of Iasos's Inter-Dimensional Music, the catalog has been gradually emerging from obscurity with larger editions of releases. Now, those editions have delved even further outward with the first vinyl release in the catalog: Arbol Trancemission's 2006 recording, Relic Grove Bliss.
Gabriel Ortiz's discography doesn't stretch far, outside of the 2008 collaboration with Housecraft label-head Xiphiidae, yet "Relic Grove Bliss" justifies those years absent from releasing material. A billow of instrumentation expands and contracts throughout these six minutes, and even with the aid of repeated listens remains somewhat hard to dissect. What may be bowed and looped guitar, bells, and wordless mantras all thrive in this diapason, mysterious and haunting while unearthly and wondrous. Onto the other side of the 7", Floating's remix may seem detrimental in theory of adding rhythm to a piece so vast and formless. However, it brings forth a similarly meditative disposition with its constant yet subtle electronic pulse. Here, "Relic Grove Bliss" is cut into pieces and crafted into a hypnotic melody.
From the stellar artwork to the mystifying sounds contained on the medium, Rotifer has entered a new and exciting stage in development. At ten minutes in total, the only hunger left is for more ambition in the way of length. Otherwise, Arbol Trancemissions and Floating provide absolutely enchanting and stunning pieces of work, educing bliss both tonally and rhythmically.
