Red Electric Rainbow - Night Vision (Hyperdelic, 2011)

Those familiar with "Dangerous" Dan Smith's Red Electric Rainbow moniker will already know where I'm going with this review. For those of you not in the know, have you been living under a rock? Some maybe quick to dismiss RER as "just another synth project" which, technically speaking, it is-- however that doesn't mean it is unwarranted. Night Vision is the first on Smith's new synth-based label, Hyperdelic, and is a great introduction.

Night Vision consists of two side-long compositions comprised mainly of repeating loops that build on top of each other, then abruptly end. The tape contains ten minutes per side, so it's just long enough to put you into a bit of a trance before halting you back to reality. The most admirable aspect of Night Vision is the relaxed feel of it. Too often an artist forces you into his or her zone, imposes their vibes on you, and makes you fall into their realm. Don't get me wrong, that isn't always a bad thing, but the way RER simply invites you into his "Nintendo Forest," caring not if you enter, makes it seem that much more fantastic and surreal. Serious synth sweeps will carry you away, only if you want them to.

The tape itself is pro-dubbed and is encased in absolutely beautiful packaging. Seriously, you'll be kicking yourself in the ass for not buying this once it goes out of print and Dan Smith becomes the next John Elliot.
