Slutever - Pretend To Be Nice (Bantic Media, 2011)

Slutever is a self-described 'brat-punk' band hailing from Philadelphia, and their first venture into the realm of vinyl is exactly what a 7" record should be-- short, energetic, attention-grabbing, and good enough to leave the listener begging for more. Now, the whole 'girl lo-fi punk rock' thing has been done a thousand times over and it could be enough of an obvious shtick to keep would-be listeners at bay, however anyone who is afraid of another Best Coast obviously cares too much.

Just because these girls play scuzzy, fast pop-punk and sing about weed, McDonalds, and boys doesn't mean that they're the genre defying buzz band of the summer. In fact, Slutever is about the farthest from Urban-Outfitters-core that one can get without being Jandek.

Pretend To Be Nice is the perfect punk record for 2011 because it doesn't give a fuck about anything except for what it is. The obvious standout track is the last track on the record titled "No Offense," which is the best written and produced track, and also appears on the band's digital EP Sorry I'm Not Sorry. Give these girls a few years, a handful of 7" records, and as much weed as they can handle and people will be looking back at Pretend To Be Nice saying "Why didn't I get into this back in 2011!?" REAL TALK.
