Caddywhompus - The Weight (Community, 2011)

New Orleans' Caddywhompus have received their share of love from Olive in the past with last year's opus Remainder, which established the duo's adroit technicality and strong appetite for pop hooks. After a year and a new EP shared, not much has changed-- but The Weight still stands undeniably noteworthy.

Whether one considers this an instance of consistency or complacency, the songwriting is more than enough to render the criticism irrelevant. Caddywhompus continue to exercise the fevered, hyper-melodic anthems provided on Remainder, though the band has opted to milk every moment of these four songs, stretching lengths considerably. The primary distinction lies within the duo's new-found appetite for structural ambition, notably on "The Others" where in the middle of its seven minutes enters a subtle devolution before headlong gushing a noise-ridden tantrum.

Listeners may not grasp this due to the brevity, but The Weight is a subtle furtherance of the band's sound-- sonics, songwriting, composition and everything in between. What Caddywhompus have gained is elusive, but if I were to try to place it, this feat could be attributed to their balance of energy and patience; each anxious flurry is mollified by a resonant calm. This refinement has kept Caddywhompus endearing while elevating their already-keen perception of arrangement.
