Divorce Party - Astrocongertion Oporium (Self-Released, 2011)

Much of noise rock, not unlike metal, free-jazz, and the more obtuse end of experimental music, relies on shock value. Not to point fingers and declare a genre's limpness, but provocation is a definite Achilles' heel. Whether or not this is effective depends on the longevity of the work, be it an LP, EP, etc. Despite how well auditory assault tactics function in favor of Michigan's Divorce Party, the risk of drawing out their music is irrelevant, as Astrocongertion Oporium clocks in at a mere 10 minutes.

In the same vein as Yowie's Cryptooology, Divorce Party bombard the senses with dizzying patterns and scattered notes conglomerating into a haphazard monolith. Mentioning any singular movement out of these five tracks is an unnecessary method of expounding Astrocongertion; the band's scatterbrained philosophy conjoins each one- to three-minute skronk in unity. Manipulated shouts and samples bounce across the mix as staggered noodling marred in tandem with bipolar tempos.

The Ypsilanti-based quartet don't transcend the circles that they're relegated to, though this release rekindles a formula of musicianship long unheard. With further refinement, Divorce Party could put forth an effort with a mentality freeing each unstable jam sequence from one another. If your ears have been yearning for abuse from groups like The Flying Luttenbachers, Shearing Pinx, or Fat Day, Astrocongertion Oporium delivers its cacophony at a confounding pace.
