Composer Kyle Bobby Dunn is an artist whose crux is gradually unveiled over the course of his discography. Even Dunn's most abnormal deviations found on releases such as Six Cognitive Works carried an essence to complement the overarching mindset of its siblings. To speculate, the ethos behind the releases seems like somewhat of a dichotomy: Dunn's more condensed, obscure releases like the cassette-housed Pour Les Octaves's concision tie a knot between tracks, whereas his more proper works tend to provide a broadened view of his many angles and moods.
Ways of Meaning falls under the latter of the two sides. Here, Dunn highlights many textures strewn about his discography while spawning others. Minimal understatements on "Statuit" and "New Pures" have been mainstays in the catalog and establish the warm, echoing keys that have characterized even the earliest of his releases. The album's apogee is located in the thick, with "Canyon Meadows," whose gorgeously bowed timbres elicit a harmonious euphoria. Dunn's venture into higher registers summons great anticipation for future releases, as this piece alone escalates his potential.
Dunn's minimalist manner could be misconstrued as an indistinct platform due to its blurriness. On the contrary, however, their amorphousness is attributed to a certain flexibility-- the capability of sculpting any environment without evoking a definite disposition. This pliancy is a flavor that I could only associate with Kyle Bobby Dunn's music. Ways of Meaning may be the peerless introduction for uninformed ears, as its diversity and flow dwell in harmony.
