Cough Cool - Cough Cool (Debacle, 2011)

Cough Cool have been releasing records and tapes since 2009 on numerous labels, not sticking to any particular one. This (to my knowledge) is their first CD release, and is actually a re-release of a cassette version released last year on Sweat Lodge Guru. Still I'll be damned if this isn't a real "2011" release. The album is barely over 20 minutes, but in that short amount of time through seven songs it manages to be one of the best releases of the year thus far.

Each track pulls off a statement, as cues of classic lo-fi beach rock slowly drift through the canal of smoke. Opener "And Nothing Happened" glides through a weightless echoing guitar riff as a carefree voice mumbles 10,000 feet below. "Congrats" spills dreamy guitar work that maintains a classic tune to its polished lo-fi neck. One thing that's striking about Cough Cool is how simple they manage to keep things, but translate that into their own raw sound to give it a distinct edge.

"Cum" and "How To Kill A Human Being" both work from a simple line, and through a linear structure, add on manipulated sounds to breathe life into the frame. The most out-there they go is on "K", which sounds like an acoustic experimentation gone haywire, but the classic sound they carry is what defines this album. If this were about two times as long these guys could get some serious attention in the indie community with music this good. Plus, that album cover just looks legendary.
