Jannick Schou - Act of Shimmering (Experimedia, 2011)

Act of Shimmering becomes somewhat of a cryptic title with knowledge of its musical contents. Experimedia brings understanding to the concept by explaining "The Act of Shimmering is the act of leaving conscious thought behind. It’s accepting what lies beyond the corporeal, transcending the physical; the soul is aware and the body, eyes, skin are distant empty casings." Using this quote as a guide is testament to Denmark composer Jannick Schou's comprehension in evoking this state of physical unconsciousness; each of the six pieces take no definite shape as guitar and tape loops moan and cascade while wrapped in quilts of reverberating feedback. Oozing through pores of mountainous rumbles are coruscating beams of harmony-- a contrast that gives the essence of the aforementioned 'shimmering'.

Lingering refrains once bound to evoke serenity surge in unison with pealing tension. Utopian acres are struck by dim overcast; lulling and startling intents converge, summoning an elusive product removed from either of the two. The body is left spellbound without fatigue, staggered without turmoil. Act of Shimmering is a dense, multifaceted state of tranquility-- an equipoise of weightlessness and sensibility. Schou's opaque layers of noise transpire into somatically arresting consonance. The correlation of presentation to the compositions remain apropos, as the harmonic drones conjure environments as cold and amorphous as the cover implies.

Further expanding upon his material, Jannick Schou unearths a hailstorm-like volume forming new, unparalleled dimensions. Though the clash between the ethereal and caustic corresponds with that of Tim Hecker's work, Act of Shimmering floods the aural senses with organic laces of dissonance that the use of electronics are incapable of emulating. In roaring waves of manipulated guitar, Jannick Schou mesmerizes listeners in a newly uncovered atmosphere.
