Jin Sangtae is the only performer credited on this album, the only instrument listed is “car horns.” While the contents of audio here are minimal, there is more to hear than a car horn. But of course, you will hear a car horn.
I am moved to say that there are other performers on this recording. There is too much, albeit quietly, happening. The sounds not explicitly car horn are both acoustic and electronic with others being electro-acoustic. The acoustic sounds have a room depth to them, and sound metallic and percussive. The electro-acoustic sounds are much louder than the percussive sounds and to my ears sound either like no-input mixer or a programming language like CSound. These are piercing tones that are colorful and waver with timbre. These sounds come and go in a way that seems too chaotic to be synthesized and are more than likely based in feedback. These sounds at times will double through a speaker or transducer of sorts, which sounds further away from the recording microphone and initial amplifier. This gives a great effect of distance as well as process. Although it is possible Sangtae is the only performer…
Sacrifice 2 is an elusive and engaging listen of silence, noise and chaos. The piece was recorded at Seoul Art Space Mullae in 2011, presumably live. It is a strong piece of experimental performance which does not lean into emotion and avoids description preferring instead that sounds be sounds.
