Bygones are a duo comprised of Zach Hill (of Hella and various side-projects) and Nick Reinhart (of Tera Melos). The only thing you'll need to remember about just about anything involving Zach Hill requires at least two listens because you'll never get it the first time. That's how it is and that's how it will always be. Upon my first listen, I was disappointed. I listened again, and this is definitely worthy of "face-meltage".
The thing different about by- is that it has less confusion and madness, and more actual songwriting. The songwriting is well done, too. It's not all mindless riffage and triplets (which I still can't figure out how Zach does). Then again, it's not too song focused, giving the songs more space for spasms and freak-outs. Bygones would've been different, however, given if someone rather than Nick Reinhart were in the band. Nick Reinhart is where all of the pop melodies come from, while Zach does his thang.
Spastic pop punk blended with math rock; what more could you ask for? Nothing. Because this album has nothing wrong with it really. Sure, there are things that could've been removed because while listening to by- you're under the impression that this is not a two-piece. But, that's average by math rock standards. The standout tracks here are "Click On That (Smash The Plastic Death)," "Fool Evolved," and "Spray You With Your Own Trip." This is because they are the prime examples of the whole blend mentioned previously.
Any Tera Melos or Zach Hill fan would get into this. It's most definitely worth the while.
