Jawbox - For Your Own Special Sweetheart (DeSoto, 1994)

Heh heh, there's a booby on the cover. Nipple. Heh heh.

OH! Hello there. Let's start the review, shall we? There were so many underrated bands of the 90's (ex: Dirt Merchants, Native Nod, Failure) and one of them just oh so happened to get some recognition from the public, and that is Jawbox. One thing that I love about this album is how it's Post-Hardcore, yes, but it's hyper-melodic. Not many bands do that. In fact I've never heard a band that does that. Sure they hold the same emo melodies like other bands such as Braid, Jawbreaker, etc. Although these melodies have a really sad and catchy/poppy vibe to them. I just find it interesting.

You really can't go wrong with this record. You already have what's-his-name from Burning Airlines with his loud, kinda scratchy voice. Plus you have one of the most awesome chick bass players (to whom I cannot remember the name of) from the 90's EVER (next to Kim Deal)! The album, although, repeats and repeats this aesthetic (hopefully I used that correctly) throughout this album. To me, it never gets old. To you, I don't know.

"FF=66" is a great opener. It seems as though every album I've reviewed here has a cool opener. Oh well. It even tells you how to pronounce the title correctly "EFF-EFF! EQUALS SIX-SIX!" I always thought it was "EFF-EFF-EQUALS SIXTY-SIX" and why is that in all caps? Whatever. And their single comes in "Savory" which has a great melody and tells exactly what I'm talking about with the hyper-melodicism thing goin' on.

The rest of the album is really good ("Cruel Swing" and "Whitney Walks" in particular). Speaking of "Whitney Walks"; it has the prime example of a good bassist. Take a listen when ya get the chance. So, I believe that Jawbox sets themselves apart from contemporaries. They set themselves apart from any band, really.

END OF STORY. BUY IT.
