Japandroids - Post-Nothing (Unfamiliar, 2009)

They really sound like a No Age rip off. It makes sense too, I mean think about it; Nouns came out in mid/late '08, these guys must have formed around that time and then released this album. Just sounds fishy.

Alright, now that that's settled, let's get to the bare bones of this review. To start it off, whatever pedals the guitarist uses are great. And the drummer is quite impressive... which means they can now move away from their only contemporary No Age! Now, the album starts with the badass opener "The Boys Are Leaving Town" having an introduction with some open E-string strumming and turning into a full on dreamy, yet distorted chord. One thing I really love about this album is just how the guys love girls, as made apparent in the song "Young Hearts Spark Fire". "I don't wanna worry about dyin'/I just wanna worry about those SUNSHINE GIRLS!" is repeated several times throughout the song.

Which brings us to another topic; repetition. In the case of this album, repetition is essential. So, don't be pissed off that their lyric sheet for the entire album is one page long. The only song that draws away from their normal style is "Heart Sweats" which has a dancier feel to it. But from my studies, they wanted a female vocalist in the beginning to be more Yeah Yeah Yeahs-like. Unfortunately, I wasn't really interested in that song as much as the rest of the album.

The last three songs of this just do what any other album does; it sums it up by giving you the same cliche as it was in the beginning. So, more songs about girls "Then we can french-kiss some French girls!" yadda yadda. Just do No Age a favor and buy their Canadian followers' record.
