Dinosaur Jr. - Farm (Jagjaguwar, 2009)

If you've read the other reviews of this, you know that people think that this is such a great album and it's one of the best things of '09. They may say that, but I find them bias. Why? Music journalists these days are trying to have a bigger interest in older things to not seem like such youngsters when reviewing the new Real Estate 7". Simply put: they're on a nostalgia-kick. This isn't a bad thing but it doesn't give people a good first impression on an album when all the reviewer has written points out solely the positive things on the album.

I'm not going to bad-mouth this at all. In fact, I'll probably say more good than bad. I never was a huge fan of Dinosaur Jr. but I did like some of their songs (ex: The Wagon, They Always Come, Sludgefest). I recently went back and pondered what these guys put out in the past. After hearing their 2007 comeback Beyond, I was a little displeased. The songs weren't very catchy and really didn't change what Dinosaur Jr. was doing. Then again, none of their albums really differ from others.

The melodies are good, yeah I can tell you that. Though the thing is, the melodies have been done before. Catchy melodies in songs are catchy because you're able to expect what comes next in it. Farm has catchy melodies, and plenty of them. They just aren't new or some type of amazing paradox in the music of today. It's just well-written yet expected. One thing I can say that's great about J. Mascis is that he sure makes up for a song by adding a sweet guitar solo to it. His guitar solos definitely give the tracks a special quality to them.

Overall, Farm is really good. Nothing ground-breaking, but still a very interesting listen for Dinosaur Jr. fans.
