Now this album is such a gem to anyone who listens to psychedelic rock. Soft Machine were one of the first bands, along with Pink Floyd, to pioneer the psychedelic sound. They started out playing at the UFO Club, a shortlived UK underground club in London that booked bands such as Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band, Eric Burdon (from The Animals), The Move, and of course Pink Floyd.
What I enjoy a lot from this album is that the music never stops. Track after track, the music just keeps flowing out of your speakers. At some moments, the music gets slow but it picks up very fast. The album sorta reminds me of Pink Floyd's The Dark Side of the Moon because of the way the music just blends together. Its like one big jam session. The first track, "Hopes for Happiness" starts out with eerie whispers. It makes you want to keep listening for what is gonna happen next. Suddenly, the drums come in and you're taken into the world of Soft Machine.
Overall, this album is very fun. It can be a little challenging to listen to at first if you're not used to listening to experimental music. I gave it a 8.4 just because I wouldn't really consider it a musical masterpiece from the 60s but it comes close.
