Ganglians - Monster Head Room (Woodsist, 2009)

I had a huge curiosity of this. Probably because of how loud and un-polished Ganglians' debut 12" sounded. This however, is a huge step up for them. All those Psychedelic Horseshit fans may think otherwise. They might have been expecting the same sound that the 12" had; just comprised into a full-length album. But that's not the case with Monster Head Room.

This had a less noisy approach to it. It wasn't lo-fi either. But fear not, this was still a really good album. The first track "Something Should Be Said" is like a church choir but more like a choir that consists of hippies. So it's a cappella. "Voodoo" shows definitely how the 12" would sound without being badly recorded. It's still rockin'; it's got that vibe. Monster Head Room also has some of the songs that were once on the 12" just recorded on something a little more expensive than a 4-track. Like "Candy Girl" which comes in a little later. It's kind of like the cutesy ballad track that just about every album has... except Prurient's "Arrowhead", heh heh.

I was a little sad that this didn't have a better version of "Hair" on it. It's my current favorite Ganglians song and I love how atmospheric it is, just with the lo-fi sound you can't really experience the atmospheres as well as you would on Monster Head Room. So, yeah. This album gets less and less loud towards the end. And it gets more and more folk as the band members decide to turn off the pedals, sing lullabies, and take naps. Thus bringing us to the final track, "Cryin' Smoke" which has another cute, yet folky melody and it tries to put you to sleep.

Overall, good album, wouldn't recommend it to everybody; especially very judgmental people... like myself.
