Wavves - Wavves (Woodsist, 2009)

ANOTHER WOODSIST REVIEW? HOW CAN THIS BE? Well I really felt like making this review, mainly because I want to get this whole controversy straight. If I had to chose to do a review of either this or Ganglians, it'd be this.

It's hard to let go of a certain style or trend once it's out there and everybody's doing it. You can't help but jump on board with everyone else. This is what happened to Wavves aka Nathan Williams. Everybody just went balls-out on this album and all of the hipsters were just throwing this on their turn tables and rocking out. And this album, to me, was made for that kind of thing. The cassette version was nowhere as good as the LP/CD version. I bought it on CD because sadly, I have no turn table. The songs on this were just right. They brought back that nostalgia of the 50's and 60's where everyone was going to the beach to hang out and surf while others were going to diners to go rollerskating and drink milkshakes. Nearly every song had that kind of sound, in my opinion. The people who hated it had a pretty good point: it was unlistenable. Just too blown-out and lo-fi for anyone to enjoy. I have to admit, it's really noisy and it's on purpose too. I can stand it because there are instances where I find myself just laying back, enjoying a Merzbow album or falling asleep while listening to The Locust.

After all of the love and craze, a video came out. It was a video of Wavves performing in someone's room decorated with LP's hanging on the walls and having a trashy feel to it. Just about everybody that saw the video was highly disappointed and almost insulted. Why? IT WASN'T NOISY! OH MY GAWD! All of the hipsters began to sell their copies of Wavves' self-titled debut and just say "They lied to me! This is all wrong!" If people didn't see it coming, they should've just shut up and put on that good ol' MWPP on full blast in disgust over this "fassaud". Hey man, Times New Viking did it, why can't he? Not only were people mad at that, they were even unpleased when P4K decided to review the second album Wavvves and give it an 8.1 while the people were unhappy with what they heard when what they heard was of course, the leaked version of the album. The leaked version had about 5 different tracks from the actual release that were all just really terrible fillers recorded in GarageBand. Which brings us to the next topic, GarageBand. IT'S FAKE LO-FI! Yes, it is. All done on GarageBand. Me, I use GarageBand all the time. It's addictive, just like the weed that Nathan smokes.

Despite all of the hate, I-really-enjoy-this. Take out all of the controversy and concept behind the album and bring it to just the music. Once you get down to that bare component, Wavves really ain't all that bad. And that's really what an album review is about; the music. It's definitely not "Oh bah, due to the hate and criticism of this musical ensemble, I have decided to stop listening to The Waves. Now if you may excuse me, I am going to go listen to my lovely Pains of Being Pure At Heart vinyl and pray to God that this other band will get off of my chest" Really people. It's ridiculous. Give Wavves another chance.

Now, I really need to talk about the album. It's really good. It has this garagey sound even though it was pretty much recorded in a bedroom. It has some cute, subtle qualities minus the distortion and fuzz. It's definitely dancey. The drums don't change much; it's kinda the same beat throughout the whole album. It can make you sing sometimes depending on your melody preference. There's not much else I can say. Buy it, don't download it.
