Now I have to say that I just love drone, especially minimal drone. And yes, I did read TMT's review and I decided to get this. That's how I find out about most artists. There was nothing very new about this. I had a pretty good prediction of what this would sound like.
It's just very soft tones with some ambience in the background and, I have to say, nothing really changed. I definitely think this is a great drone album for people who don't enjoy many layers in their music. The highest amount of layers included in Tape Chants was about three, maybe four. It's very predictable yet pleasant. The melodies are well-thought and the ambience used went very well with how the music sounded.
Same with the Sunn O))) review, this is a very good album to take a nap to. The only difference is that you don't need to examine tracks for background noises that you won't find on a casual drone listen. Nothing very special with this release, but I believe that's what Gregg Kowalski was going for. I'm not giving this a bad rap at all, I really enjoyed this and you should too if you're into soft ambience that's made with tapes and is perfectly done. Tape Chants most certainly receives very high marks.
