Such a clever name eh? Methodrone like the drug Methadone. I bet TBJM took a lot of Methadone when they made this. Anyways, The Brian Jonestown Massacre was formed in the 1990s by Anton Newcombe. He is a multi-instrumentalist who claims he can play over 80 different instruments. Him and his band have had tons of line up changes over the years. I believe over 40 people have been involved in it.
To get to the point, Methodrone is a total shoegaze album. You can tell Anton and the band listened to a shit load of MBV before recording this. Every song is just bliss. Its one of those albums that you don't skip around each track. You play it all the way with the volume turned up at the maximum level. When I first listened to this album, the song that really grabbed my attention was "Wisdom". I had to listen to it over and over and over again (you get the point). In a way, it sorta reminds me of the Deerhunter song "Spring Hall Convert".
Methodrone is such a treat for anyone into shoegaze. I guarantee you will love this album.

ReplyDeleteI had this week where I'd listen to She Made me and Hyperventilation on repeat in the middle of the night. Very trippy.
I bet Anton was the one who took most methadone. ^^
Wisdom is a good choice for a first favourite. For me it was That Girl Suicide. Both songs were really good live, too.
