Interview: Fungi Girls

I recently had the pleasure of asking Sky from Fungi Girls a few questions about the new album coming out, recording and lo-fi bands.

So, your new album, Magic Fields was recorded with someone from Fergus & Geronimo. How did that go?
It's actually called Blue Trip now. Recording was done in two sessions, one in March and one recently in late June. The former was mainly the actual music itself and the latter was all vocals. It all went over really well. Jason Kelly of Fergus & Geronimo has been a big help and he did a really great job with it overall.

Despite recording quality, would you say the new LP is a step up from the Psilo Demo?
Oh yeah, definitely. Our sound has matured so much since then as well as changed a little bit with the help of fuzz and reverb pedals. All the stuff on the Psilo Demo was recorded nearly a year ago, so maybe that will give you an idea of how we could have shifted our sound and matured.

Did any bands or certain things influence this new record?
Not really any particular bands, but I think just going places was an influence. Traveling, whether it be physically or mentally.

What would you say it sounds like?
If I were to describe it, I'd say it somehow mixes garage rock and shoegaze together. Maybe a little Pavement and C86 shit thrown in here and there. I don't really know. I hate trying to describe our sound.

Do you have any touring plans or anything coming up?
We were supposed to tour late this summer, but we had to back out for various reasons. We were going to do it with Psychedelic Horseshit, but they were having financial issues, so I think we might try again next summer or something, but I'm not sure. We do have some pretty exciting shows coming up, though, with The Intelligence, Reading Rainbow, Davila 666, and Teenage Cool Kids' record release show. So, that should all be pretty fun.

What do you think of lo-fi bands these days? I think they're pretty overrated, although there are some hidden gems out there.
I don't really care, honestly. A lot of the newer lo-fi bands I've heard that have came out in the past year or so aren't all that great, but not all of them. I like more raw/rough recordings because they feel more genuine and personal to me, but when people start recording shit then adding mass amounts of fuzz to their music (ala Wavves) in GarageBand, I think that kind of crosses the line. I just think it's kind of silly.

I heard you guys are pretty good friends with Matt from Psychedelic Horseshit. How did you two come to meet?
Well, not really good friends, but we know him. We first came to know him when we played a show with them pre-SXSW at this place called The Chat Room. We've hung out with them a couple of times after that at some other shows they've played here and I guess we've kind of became friends. Both him and Rich are super nice and chill guys.

I'm just going to assume that you guys are mixed in with the Psychedelic Horseshit vs. Wavves dilemma? What's your point of view on it?
I'm not going to deny that Wavves has a good sense of melody. He has a few really good songs (Sun Opens My Eyes, Teenage Super Party, Gun In The Sun), but I think his personality and live shows have kind of ruined his music for me. Psychedelic Horseshit > Wavves, most definitely. Especially Psychedelic Horseshit's newer stuff. Shitgaze Anthems is probably in my top three favorite releases of the year.

Is there anything you'd like to say before signing off?
Nope.

Short, sweet and to-the-point. Fungi Girls' new LP Blue Trip will be released on Play Pinball! Records this summer.
