The Folk Implosion - Dare To Be Surprised (Communion Label, 1997)

With Dinosaur Jr. fans choosing between the two main members J. Mascis and Lou Barlow, most would choose J. Mascis. Me, I would choose Lou Barlow. Sure, he doesn't play any sweet solos or anything but I find him to be a better songwriter than J, in both of his bands Sebadoh and The Folk Implosion. Normally, my justification for this would be Sebadoh's nearly self-titled album The Sebadoh because no Mascis fan would be able to get over how great songs like "Bird In The Hand" and "Flame" were. Just recently, I've chosen The Folk Implosion's Dare To Be Surprised as my justification.

Electronic beats, bedroom pop overtones and half-hushed vocals; each of these components all point their fingers at Pinback. I wouldn't be surprised if this were a Pinback album. Well, maybe a little. There are definitely differences between this album and a Pinback album which I won't get into right now. Every song throughout this album are all well-written, technical (guitar-wise), and excruciatingly catchy.

The entire album is just laden with pop. There's a difficulty choosing standout tracks, however. But if I were to advise someone to listen to certain tracks of the album before buying it, I would choose "Pole Position", "Wide Web", "Insinuation", "Barricade", "That's The Trick", "Checking In", "Cold Night", "Park Dub", "Burning Paper", "(Blank Paper)", "Ball & Chain", "Fall Into November", "Dare To Be Surprised" and "River Devotion". Oh wait! One, two, that's the entire album. Well, yes, it's that good. If you're a fan of Pinback. You'll realize that Pinback would probably be nothing without this album. But, I'm making the whole Pinback comparison thing more apparent than it needed to be.

If you're in the mood for some layback pop music that's consistent and stays that way, definitely go get this.
