It seems as we're chock-full of lo-fi reviews this week (well, two reviews)! But hey, it's all I've been listening to next to Miles Davis's Bitches Brew. Mazes are an act from Manchester, UK and they create an easily pleasing brand of pop punk which you may refer to the dreaded term "indie rock". They just released their new 7" entitled... well... I just call it by the first track, Bowie Knives. If it isn't called Bowie Knives, then it must be self-titled. Any who. It's possible this may be the only thing the band has released and if it's not, I'm missing out.
The first track "Bowie Knives" comes in, and it sounds a lot like Times New Viking. And on first listen, I was thinking, "Oh, nothing special here." There isn't really much. It's a slower than usual, TNV song. Nothing wrong with that. The melody is well thought out, and original. Moving on; "Bethedsa". With the indecipherable vocals, there's not a whole lot I can tell what the song is about. Something about a witch. Music-wise, it takes both comparisons of TNV and GBV and makes them into a nice lo-fi sammich. The only downside of the song would be the repetition, but it's a good melody, so it's necessary repetition. The final track (keep in mind this is a 7") is "I'm A Smoker" is a quick filler but it's nothing short of awesome. If you're a Guided By Voices fan of any sort, this filler would be a filler to you. It's a folky GBV song and it's easy to mistake for one of their songs off, say, Alien Lanes or Bee Thousand.
If you're a reader of this blog and enjoy most of what is reviewed here, definitely go buy this. It's worth your time. Plus, it's entire duration is five minutes so if you're displeased, it'll only be a short while. But nonetheless, buy it.
