Phil And The Osophers - Parallelo (Factual Fabrications, 2009)

Phil And The Osophers are a band from Brooklyn, New York that create songs that are very well thought out, catchy, and intelligent. Intelligence is without a doubt a factor in music that has been missing for a while now, mainly due to the infectious lo-fi trend that has been roaming music journalism for nearly a year now. P&TO do the intelligent thing to do and make songs fit for the summer without being drenched in hiss and hum. Don't get me wrong, the songs aren't in the highest fidelity you could imagine, but it's commendable in this case because it's average in most independent bands of today.

Parallelo is a great album from a band so small (at the moment). Witty lyrics, reverberated guitars, and jazzy song structures; this band has been dubbed "a cuddlier Black Lips." Not even a Black Lips fan would make that comparison if they heard this... but that's beside the point. The way the guitars sound remind me of Real Estate for some reason. They're very crisp and clean, yet it has some mild reverb added on. The drumming is very impressive and doesn't play your average beats these days. The cowbell and harmonica also add variety to the album. As the album goes along, it calms itself down towards the end and has a slow and atmospheric finale, topping off a great album.

Overall, the album is very well-built. It's not all strung together in a lame web of consistency. In fact, I came across these sort of heart-stopping moments in the songs where I'm questioning why this band doesn't have a larger fan base. If you're looking for a smart, charming and fun listen, this is a definite must-buy.
