The Sorely Trying Days - Survival Mode (Useless World, 2009)

After numerous listens of Black Flag's Damaged I'm always thinking "Why can't punk just be punk?" Punk is now left in the dust because people just love to say that punk is dead. It obviously isn't because people still categorize certain bands as punk--oh wait, let me correct myself. They use stupid terms like noise punk, funk punk, and my favorite, cow punk. What is that? Is it just punk with mooing as vocals?

Aside from that, The Sorely Trying Days are a band of today that make regular punk. They just released their debut album Survival Mode. For a debut album, it's very, very well-made. Nice fidelity, nice riffs, and an overall nice attitude. As a punk album, it's nothing too in-your-face or menacing. It minds its own business and keeps everything in order. It does have a hardcore tinge to it, particularly the vocals. Yelling, chanting, screaming; you get the gist of it.

There's nothing bad about this album except the fact that the songs are sort of strung together into one big song but it's something a lot of bands do these days. This is also pretty melodic. The best way that this can be described is "a rampaging orgy of aggressive 80s hardcore and hook laden 70s rock, metal, and pop." Couldn't have said it any better myself. When listening to this, you have to agree with the quote. But even though this has a bunch of genres sandwiched together, it's still the good ol' punk you heard back in the day.
