Weirdlords - Zizlore's Mansion (Aviation, 2009)

Now, as much as I hate Teenage Panzerkorps, I can't help but compare Weirdlords to them. Now, Weirdlords' album Zizlore's Mansion isn't bad, but it's not all that great either. They're one of those iffy bands that'll leave you scratching your head and deciding wether or not you should get a refund on what you bought.

Weirdlords are from the Bay Area, so if you've been to Amoeba recently, you might have stumbled upon this already. They make this weird, paranoid, distorted post-punk, these days it's considered just "lo-fi." Lo-fi music is often split apart into two groups: the West Coast, shoegazey, "tropical," happy sound that everyone's going for. And then there's the East Coast that makes dark, Joy Division-influenced punk that people don't really enjoy. Weirdlords are like immigrants in this situation because their music has that East Coast vibe but they originated in the West Coast.

But the real question in this situation is always "Is the album worth hearing?" Yes, it is. The only turn-off of this are the upfront vocals. They're repetitive, and are used more like an instrument rather than a voice. So why not turn it down in the mix? The instruments are what make the album good though: fuzzy bass, crunchy guitars, and danceable drum beats. The band at the moment doesn't have the best reputation on the internet. But hey, as long as it sounds good, right?
