Pissed Jeans - King Of Jeans (Sub Pop, 2009)

Before I give my opinion on Pissed Jeans' new album King Of Jeans, let me just say that I predict this album cover will most definitely win as both the best and worst album cover of 2009. I can imagine just what the members of Pissed Jeans were thinking. "*looks at arm* Awwwww yeaahhhh."

In all seriousness, Pissed Jeans have made a great third album. It just screams "adolescence" and "I'm drunk!" at the same time, which is hard to do these days without sounding too gimmicky. It also has more balls than their previous album Hope For Men too. Just everything is pounding and heavier than your 350 pound cousin whom you never mention to any of your friends. On King Of Jeans, they just decide to lose the goofiness ("IIIIIIIIII still got you!---CHOCOLATE.") and just go bonkers. At no point does this album ever fall into obscurity or tedium. Just 12 tracks of pummeling, loud punk.

It's a great sound, but it's definitely not original. On this album, Pissed Jeans are just so indebted to The Jesus Lizard and Flipper that people could point out the similarities within the first two seconds of any song. Especially Jesus Lizard once hearing the vocals. The album has this sound pretty much throughout except on some songs where the tempo is severely lowered to the point where you think your turntable is at 2 RPM, but the songs make up for it by speeding up to the rate of every other song. It could be a hard listen hearing the entire album due to the lack of change but any sludgy noise rock fan would just be like "YEEAAAHHH, WOOO!" while hearing this.

Which makes me come to another point; just because this is on Sub Pop does not make it worthy of a listen from a Fleet Foxes fan. Yes, I know you were sad because you went partially deaf after hearing Wolf Eyes' Burned Mind but baby the cake ain't all yours! Keep on writing to your "Juno is the best movie evar" forum because this ice cream is all mine!
