The Savage Young Taterbug - River Mortis (Night People, 2009)

With a name like The Savage Young Taterbug, anyone who has the least bit of an open mind should wonder what his latest Night People release, River Mortis sounds like. And I highly suggest doing just that, as words cannot accurately describe the sounds pouring out of my headphones. The sounds recorded onto this c20 cassette tape seem to defy reality as they somehow come from my walkman, through my headphones, into my ears and bring my brain into another dimension of spacetime. When Night People label head Shawn Reed described River Mortis as "lost in a cornfield for life searching for that mystic tee pee in the sky filled with pretty young boys and drugs." I don't really think he could have hit the spot more. This is the kind of music that happens when you're from Iowa I guess...?

The actual sounds on the tape seem to consist of keyboard and voices, I can't really hear much else. What seem to be loosely-constructed songs flow together into two unholy medleys, each ten minutes long. Long enough to space out to, but short enough to not let your mind wander too far. This is abstract as all get out, and I'm going to caution any wary listener right now: this is fucking out there man! But, if you can get past that, if you're a bad-enough dude to deal with an acid-coated Children of the Corn, complete with what sounds like "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star," you may find some beautiful imagery and innocent ideas floating around on this.
