Inverness - Forest Fortress (Self-Released, 2009)

Inverness: a small town in Scotland. Nowhere near where this band is from. Indeed this is a group of Animal Collective and My Bloody Valentine influenced shoegazy ambient psychedelic dream pop gentlemen from Brazil. Sao Paolo to be precise. Forest Fortress is their first proper album and you can download it free or, if you like it, you can buy it from them. So what do I think? How do I feel about this album and do I think you should listen to them?

Inverness give me good vibes, they're feel-good shoegaze. "If I Were A Giant" makes me sit back and think it's sunny, it's a good day, I'm just gonna relax in the sunshine. Though I say that as if it's the only track on the album which makes me feel like that, it's not. In fact most of the tracks on the album give me that feeling, sadly where I live is 90% of the time cloudy, cold, wet and miserable. Ah well, c'est la vie.

One of the things I respect about Inverness is that the samples they use are entirely free to the public, so if you and a group of friends want to form a ragtag band that plays shoegazey experimental music then you can be lazy and steal all of Inverness's samples. Or maybe you'll y'know get yer own samples ya lazy thievin' bastards. So what more can I tell you about Inverness? I like them but there are a few things that do bug me a bit. The songs can, at times, sound a bit too similar as there often isn't variation in terms of the guitar effects but I'd argue that this is made up for by the quality of the guitar playing which remains pretty sterling throughout. Vocally you have great haunting wavy backing vocals that float in and out.

The way I put it is with Inverness there's a lot of potential, some tracks are so perfectly formed, like, "Toungueling" and "Forest Fortress (title track)," then others like "Astral Slide" seem like they're lacking something, a polish or additional feature that'd make them that much better. Inverness do come up with some of the goods so I'd say give 'em a good listen but keep an ear out for their future projects.
